Did you really believe that?

#I love it because martha is all ‘you’re such a fucking idiot’ #and she laughs at the master #she laughs at the fucking psycho who has been destroying earth and who kept her family prisoners #she laughs at someone who could kill her any second #she makes him look like a moron #she takes the power away from him and she turns the tables (via iceinherheart-kissonherlips)

YES THIS IS WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE MARTHA MOMENT

Also, two thoughts (neither of them new, but I never connected them before) just clicked in my head:

The first thing: Martha is in the Doctor’s role in this episode. Not just that she’s the one saving the day, but TO THE MASTER AS WELL. He puts all his energy into capturing her, defeating her, humiliating her, because he doesn’t want to admit he was ever afraid of her. The Doctor’s spent a year being boring and of no interest to him no matter how hard he prods. It’s incredibly telling that by the end of the year, he’s tormenting the Doctor to try and get at Martha through the people she loves, instead tormenting Martha to get at the Doctor. Martha is the Master’s true archenemy in LotTL, at least for the first three-quarters of it.

The second thing: Mind of Evil. The one thing the Master fears most in the universe is the Doctor laughing in his face.

And when Martha takes on the Doctor’s role, what does she do? THIS GIFSET, YOU GUYS.

so martha and mickey right a lot of people are like oh they just slapped the black supporting characters together how lame

except that’s not exactly what happened i mean they both were companions who walked away from the doctor because the doctor didn’t need them. they felt unappreciated by the objects of their affections and furthermore they felt they were more important “at home”. so they both wandered off, having become warriors more or less out of necessity - martha was with unit, mickey took up alternate mickey’s place in the resistance and such. and they probably spent most of their lives wanting to talk about the fact that they met an alien, an amazing alien who did amazing things and they did some amazing things at his side but they just. couldn’t do them anymore because it hurt. because the people they were in love with didn’t love them back and then somehow, serendipity threw martha and mickey together and they must have fallen in love so quickly once they talked. can you just imagine mickey telling martha about how in love he was with rose, and how in love with the doctor she was, and martha just nodding and looking up at him in that way she looked up at the doctor sometimes, downing her drink and telling him how terribly smitten with the doctor she was but the memory of that girl was always in the way and she could never, ever have him as more than an ungrateful friend because of her and he just reaches over and takes her hand and tells her he’s grateful for her and how life brought them together AND I’M SORRY IF YOU DON’T THINK MICKEY/MARTHA IS A COOL SHIP YOU HAVEN’T THOUGHT ABOUT IT ENOUGH

Doctor Who meme: Six Companions [6/6]

↳ Martha Jones

porlasbarbasdeclotario:

(this is to answer the question you posted about why the fandom dislikes Martha Jones—I’m making it a submission because it’s going to be long).

To the whovians who dislike Martha Jones (for being “too whiny”):

Are you kidding me?? Seriously?? It’s Martha freakin badass Jones. The Martha Jones who was always unacknowledged and put down. I mean, she endured racism and sexism and had her heart broken over and over again. And you know what? She even endured racism and sexism from the Doctor. The person she loved and admired. And she still saved his butt.

He never acknowledged her. He used her to feed his own ego. If anything, that’s why the fandom should be more critical of the Doctor’s character, not Martha’s. She didn’t even complain. She still saved the world, and the only recognition she got (and it was well deserved) was when she walked the entire Earth, and then that recognition was taken from her because it was the year that never happened.

She saved millions of people and didn’t even get any acknowledgement for it. And she still didn’t complain. All she did was get out, and it was about time too. At the end of it, the Doctor wasn’t even really sorry that he had hurt her. He was more sorry about the fact that he had lost yet another companion was forced to travel alone.

She was a rebound figure for the Doctor, but she was also an amazing badass character who didn’t deserve to be a rebound.

It’s nice to see a strong female character like her on the show, and it’s even better to see a strong female character who isn’t white on the show. She was badass. Anyone who can’t see that is blind.

I mean, in at least 70% of the episodes of season 3, she was on her own, separated from the Doctor, helping to save the world. Or she was the only one saving the world. And yet, the entire season was more focused on the Doctor’s own suffering and pain.

The writers were really unfair to her character, but she still managed to be badass. Freema Agyeman did an excellent job playing her.

So, if anyone were to ask me who my favorite companion is, I’d automatically answer Martha Jones for the reasons stated above. She’s amazing, strong, independent, beautiful, and overall just badass.

Edit: Thank you. I also think that Martha Jones is fuckin badass and she’s one of my favourite companions, too (Wilf is my favourite favourite).

Another essay from the brilliant wintermoth who has effectively swayed me from sorting Martha into Ravenclaw:

I think Hufflepuff for Martha because she’s patient, she’s kind, hardworking, resourceful and just. Dead clever, yes, but being a Ravenclaw isn’t all about being smart. She’s down to earth and reasonable, she takes her knowledge and applies it logically and doesn’t lose her head in a crisis. She’s very patient and kind—she put up with Ten’s bullshit during season 3, particularly during the whole Human Nature bit. I mean damn. If I’d been stuck in 1913 working as a maid, I’d have probably been sacked day one. Cause I’d have cussed out and/or drop kicked Baines or one of those other sexist bastards, and I’m white so it wouldn’t have even have been as bad for me!
Plus, she’s the mediator in the family. Mum and Tish on one side, Dad and Leo on the other, with Martha smack in the middle and expected to be on everyone’s side at once.

Another thing about Martha that is very Hufflepuff-y is that she is underestimated and under appreciated, by characters in the show as well as the fandom. If you told someone that a Hufflepuff was going to walk and save the world on her own, they’d probably laugh!

Also, think about Tonks. Damn good fighter, intelligent, loyal, and was able to look past age and difference in species to see someone worthy and deserving of loving. Sound familiar?
